Australia's MusicPulse Survey Results - w/c 30th January 2011 - Katy Perry is no longer No.1!

Can you believe that January 2011 is almost over? I even saw Hot Cross Buns and Easter Eggs in our local supermarket this weekend!

But on to more important stuff...this week’s Australian MusicPulse survey results.

One observation .... Britney Spears new song is not testing well at all and despite all the hype, I wouldn’t be counting on hearing it on the radio here much longer. It’s not gaining traction with any demographic we track and is in fact sliding backwards with key ones. Her best look is with teens where she manages a No.19 position, but all other demographics have her in low 20s. Goes to prove, you can't believe all the hype and the music fans will tell us the truth...:)

On to this week’s Top 5 testing songs with 10-39yr olds in Australia:

At No.1...a change as ‘Who’s That Chick’ by David Guetta feat Rihanna slides up to take the crown.

No.2 goes to Mr. Hot himself, Bruno Mars with ‘Grenade’. It’s getting real traction from adults now making it to No.1 with 33-39yr olds and No.3 with 25-54yr olds.

No.3 is ‘Dirty Talk’ from Wynter Gordon.

At No.4 is the song which kicked the year off at No.1, Katy Perry with ‘Firework’. But don’t feel sorry for Katy as her new song ‘E.T.’ moves up to No.18.

And at No.5 are Enrique Iglesias & Ludacris with ‘Tonight (I’m LovingYou’).

Katy Perry has a great New Year! Australia's MusicPulse survey results for w/c 16th January 2011

This week’s Australian MusicPulse survey results see us only a couple of weeks into the new year and already Katy Perry is at No.1, this week with ‘Firework’. Like her or not, she certainly knows how to produce a hit song.

At No.2 this week is Bruno Mars, with ‘Grenade’ while ‘Just The Way You Are' see’s some ‘Burn’ (people are tiring of it) start to affect its performance and it slips one spot to No.4.

Splitting the Bruno Mars tracks at No.3 are Guy Sebastian and Eve with ‘Who’s That Girl’. Nice to have an Australian in the Top 5 as we start the new year.

And at No.5 we find Nelly with ‘Just a Dream’.

Happy New Year!

OK..here's what we did. We took the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Top 30 selling singles for the decade 2000-2009 from their recently released Top 100 sales chart (see full list here) and asked our music experts (that would be you) to rate them by popularity.

We were keen to find out which songs hold up with the passing of time...and looking at the results we'd have to say...not many of them. Only the Top 17 garnered enough points to warrant playing by radio.

And notice the bottom six...all of them except one have something in common and it's not a good sign for local commercial music.

Results from this weeks’ Australian MusicPulse survey are now available and posted below.

And it’s a big week for Bruno Mars....there’s no doubting his popularity across the board as he really kicks in with adults.

Here’s how the Top 5 pans out this week.

At No.1 is the aforementioned Bruno Mars, with ‘Just The Way You Are’ returning to the top spot on back of big adult numbers. It’s been building slowly with adults over the past few weeks and it all comes home this week.

And at No.2....Bruno Mars making his second appearance in the Top five with ‘Grenade’....the current teen favourite. Adults are not so hot on this one....yet anyway.

Ke$Ha is at No.3 with ‘We R Who We R’....doing particularly well with 10-24 yr olds.

The No.4 spot goes to Rihanna with ‘Only Girl (In the world)’...slipping from its No.1 spot last week.

And at No.5 this week is Katy Perry with ‘Firework’.

Katy Perry's on fire but Rihanna is No.1...Australias' MusicPulse survey results for w/c 5th December 2010

This weeks’ Australian MusicPulse survey results are now available.

Here’s how the Top 5 in this country looks this week as we head into summer.

At No.1 this week we find Rihanna with ‘Only Girl (In The World’)....a song that’s doing well with all age groupings but particularly so with teens and 18-24yr olds.

Bruno Mars is at No.2 with ‘Just The Way You Are’....a song that’s starting to show significant ‘burn’ (IE: people are starting to tire of it) with 10-24yr olds, but loved by adults still.

At No.3, look out...here comes Katy Perry with ‘Firework’....another song doing well with 10-24yr olds but developing strongly with adults.

No.4 is Bruno Mars again...this time with ‘Grenade’....demonstrating very strong ‘Potential’ (IE: people who know the song love it but a lot still don't know it) numbers and is a good bet for No.1 in coming weeks.

And at No.5 is Nelly with ‘Just A Dream’.

This weeks’ Australian MusicPulse survey results are now available.

And this week we get our first look at a whole bunch of new songs...P!NK, The Glee Cast, Brooke Fraser, Good Charlotte, Swedish House Mafia, James Blunt amongst others that I’m sure the record companies will be seeing as vital in the run up to Christmas. All of them are still finding their feet with ‘Familiarity’ being relatively low, but it will be interesting to track their progress in coming weeks.

Here are the results of our Australian MusicPulse survey for week commencing 21st Nov 2010. This is how you ranked the music....what's hot and what's not.

The Top 5 looks like this:

Rising to No.1 is Rihanna with ‘The Only Girl (In The World)’, particularly strong with 10-32yr old females, where it is also ranked No.1

At No.2 this week is Bruno Mars with ‘Just The Way You Are’, but it is carrying substantial ‘Burn’ numbers (ie: people are starting to get really tired of it...it's 'burning out') with 18-24yr olds.

The No.3 spot goes to Katy Perry with ‘Teenage Dream’, while her newie ‘Firework’ sits at No.9 this week (teens already prefer Firework).

Eminem feat. Rihanna is at No.4 with ‘Love The Way You Lie’.

And rounding out the top five at No.5 is the dependable P!NK with ‘Raise Your Glass’, already ranking No.1 with 33-39yr and 25-54yr olds.

Bruno Mars is king of the hill! Australia's' MusicPulse survey results w/c 31st October 2010

This weeks’ Australian MuiscPulse survey results are now available...our weekly look at what Australian music consumers really think of today’s music.

The Top 5 this week looks much as it did last week with no surprises.

At No.1 this week is Bruno Mars with ‘Just The Way You Are’......one of those songs that’s proving popular with all age demographics.

Katy Perry is at No.2 this week with ‘Teenage Dream’....another song that’s strong with all demographics and is No.1 with 33-39 and 25-54yr old groups.

At No.3 is Nelly with ‘Just A Dream’ which still has some growth room with adults....but is very strong with the 10-32yr olds.

At No.4 we find Usher feat. Pitbull with ‘DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love’. With ‘Burn’ (IE: people are starting to get tired of it...burning out so to speak) starting to build, we’ll probably see this slide out of the five next week.

And at No.5 is ‘Club Can’t Handle Me’ by Flo Rida feat. David Guetta....a song which is still strong with 18-39yr olds.

Songs we’re expecting to show continued growth in the next week or so include ‘Check It Out’ from Will.I.am feat. Nicki Minja (No.10 this week) and ‘Hey Baby (Drop it to the floor) by Pitbull feat. T-Pain (No.13), both songs demonstrating strong ‘Potential’ numbers.

Nelly rises to the top - Australias' MusicPulse survey results for w/c 24th October 2010...

Here's this weeks’ Australian MusicPulse survey results....

And as expected, ‘Burn’ is really starting to have an effect on some of the hits that have been hanging around in the Top 10 for a few weeks now. For example, last weeks’ No.1 ‘Dynamite’ by Taio Cruze slips down to No.10 this week on the back of a 25% burn figure. That simply means you're getting tired of it.

Here’s how the Top 5 stacks up this week:

No.1 – ‘Just A Dream’ by Nelly.

No.2 – ‘Just The Way You Are’ by Bruno Mars

No.3 – ‘Teenage Dream’ by Katy Perry

No.4 – ‘Only Girl (In The World)’ by Rihanna

No.5 – ‘Check It Out’ by Will.I.Am feat. Nicki Minaj

With ‘burn’ starting to climb on a couple of them we expect more changes in the next week or so.

This week we got our first look at new songs from P!NK and Adam Lambert. While Adam Lambert is away to a good start demonstrating strong ‘Potential’ numbers, P!NK is a little more subdued, failing to engage the 10-32yr old crowd just yet...but doing well with adults.

Announcing new online Commercial Free radio station...MusicPulse 'The Hits'....All Hits, All The Time!

We've been having a bit of fun this week putting together a brand new online radio station that plays All Hits All The Time and NO Commercials.

Utilising the new Goom Radio platform the sound is awesome. Musically, we're using the feedback you give us from the weekly Australian MusicPulse survey results to build our playlist. Plus there are a few old favourites in there along with heaps of new stuff, much of it weeks ahead of Australian terrestrial radio.

We're having a lot of fun and the station evolves a bit more each day. In due course we'll get some interviews, news etc up on there. But for now it's all music.

We'll be rolling out a few more stations in coming weeks with different music focuses. Please feel free to suggest some musical formats if you like. We're open to ideas.

This weeks’ Australian MusicPulse survey results are now available. What’s hot with Australian music consumers at the moment.

The quick summary:

A lot of old favourites in the Top 5 this week, but the deckchairs have been rearranged a little.

Sitting at No.1 as best testing song of the week are Eminem & Rihanna with ‘Love The Way You Lie’, a song that is proving to be really hot with adults this week rating No.1 with 25-32yr olds, 33-39yr olds and 25-54yr olds.

No.2 spot overall finds ‘Club Can’t Handle Me ‘ by Flo Rida feat. David Guetta. It’s No.1 with the 18-24yr old respondents.

At No.3 this week is ‘I Like It’ by Enrique Iglesias feat. Pitbull.

‘Dynamite’ by Tao Cruze comes in at No.4 ...No.1 wit teens.

And rounding out the Top 5 is Katy Perry with ‘Teenage Dream’, slipping from the No.1 spot it had occupied for the past two weeks, though it is still rated No.1 by Pop music partisans.

Is Australia getting the rhythmic vibe? This weeks Australian MusicPulse survey results would have you thinking so....w/c 12th Sept 2010

This weeks’ Australian Music Pulse survey results are now available.

And if this weeks’ Top 5 are anything to go by, Australia is becoming quite a rhythmic nation.

Firstly though, some pure pop at No.1 with Katy Perry's ‘Teenage Dream’....as predicted off last weeks’ numbers.

Leading the rhythmic charge as the No.2 testing song this week is ‘Love The Way You Lie’ by Eminem feat. Rihanna....testing well across all age demographics including adults! A mass appeal Eminem song...who would’ve thought....

At No.3 is ‘DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love’ by Usher feat Pitbull....it’s strength coming from the 10-24yr old crowd. Adults have a way to go yet on this one.

The No.4 spot is taken up this week by ‘Club Can’t Handle Me’ from Flo Rida feat. David Guetta.

‘Dynamite’ by Tao Cruz slips to No.5 this week.

We’re also keeping an eye on Nickelback’s ‘This Afternoon’ which sits at No.18 but shows good ‘Potential’ and is strong with anyone who’s familiar with it over 18yrs of age...teens either haven’t discovered it yet or plain don’t like it.

Similarly Good Charlotte and The Script (No’s.21 & 22 respectively) show good ‘potential’ numbers which bodes well for coming weeks.

The full top 30 is below, but here’s the quick summary of what’s happening down under this week.

Sitting at No.1 this week are Eminem & Rihanna with ‘Love The Way You Lie’. And proving he’s as strong as ever, Eminem still has two songs in the Top 10, popping up again at No.7 with ‘Not Afraid’.

At No.2 are Usher and Pitbull with ‘DJ Got us Fallin’ In Love’, which ranks No.1 with 10-17yr and 18-24yr olds. Adults are not quite so kind.

Katy Perry sits at No.3 with ‘Teenage Dream’.

One song of note this week is Nickelbacks’ ‘This Afternoon’. While only No.17 overall, it’s doing particularly well with adults, with the 33-39yr olds putting it at No.1 and 25-54yr olds make it No.3, while teens and 18-24yr olds have still to see any merit in it.

Finally...a song we’ve been tracking for some time now, Lady Antebellum’s ‘Need You Now’ is finally getting traction with adults, sitting just outside the top ten with both 33-39yr and 25-54yr olds.

Another Lost Classic - Marc Almond & Gene Pitney!

Another in our series of lost classics.

You don't hear this on the radio much anymore...unfortunately. A great love song that got two outings. First done by Gene Pitney back in the 1960s, then again in 1989 by Marc Almond & Gene Pitney! That's right...Gene charted twice with the same song over 20 years apart. Marc Almond of course was one half of the very successful 80s group Tears For Fears (oops my mistake...it was Soft Cell of course...as pointed out in teh Comments. Thanks for showing me the error of my ways....).

Great lyrics too. To my way of thinking, the opening lines sum up exactly what falling in love does to you:

This weeks’ Australian MusicPulse survey results are available. And like our politics (for those reading this from overseas and haven't caught up with our news, we had a Federal election on the weekend and for the first time since WWII we have a hung parliament)...we have a hung result for No.1 this week.

The two songs fighting it out are ‘Dynamite’ by Tao Cruz and ‘Love The way You Lie’ by Eminem, both scoring exactly the same ‘Popularity’ ranking, though Tao Cruz gets a slight nose ahead based on ‘Potential’. So...Tao Cruz No.1 and Eminem feat. Rihanna at No.2...but it’s close.

At No.3 is Flo Rida feat. David Guetta with ‘Club Can’t Handle Me’, performing best with teens where it’s also No.3 this week.

Eminem is also sitting at No.4 this week with ‘Not Afraid’.

And rounding out the Top 5 at No.5 is ‘Airplanes’ by B.o.B. feat. Hayley Williams.

Lady GaGa had a slightly better week this week with ‘Dance In The Dark’, but still has a ways to go to rank up there with her strongest songs.

Melbourne & Sydney Radio Listening surveys for August 2010

From time to time we like to find out what radio stations people are listening to in various markets around Australia.

At the moment we're focusing on Melbourne...but we could also do with some input from Sydney listeners as well. The surveys are very short...just 5 quick questions, but the feedback you give is very important. It's fed back to the stations and helps them with their planning. So in reality, you're helping make them sound a lot better.

This weeks’ Australian MusicPulse survey results are now downloaded and available.

The summary:

After a couple of weeks hogging the top spot, Adam Lambert makes way for Katy Perry and her ‘California Gurls’. Not only is it No.1 overall with the 10-39yr olds, it’s also No.1 with each of tracked age groupings except for teen s who have her at No.2. Incidenatlly, the teens have Eminem’s ‘Not Afraid’ in the top spot.

At No.2 overall Eminem feat. Rihanna with ‘Love The Way You Lie’. Doing well across all age demographics.

The aforementioned Adam Lambert has slipped to No.3 overall with ‘If I Had You’.

At No.4 is another familiar favourite, ‘Airplanes’ by B.o.B featuring Hayley Williams. Burn (IE: people are starting to get tired of it) is slowly building.

And at No.5 we find ‘Dynamite’ with Tao Cruz, doing particularly well with the 10-32yr old crowd.

The interesting story of the week though is Lady GaGa’s new single, ‘Dance In The Dark’ which is lingering at No.25 overall. It’s performing particularly poorly with the 10-32yr olds, only coming good with the 33-39yr olds and 25-54yr olds. Even her ‘Potential’ figures aren’t flash, meaning even those who know the song aren’t convinced yet. Is this the first sign of GaGa becoming an adult act and the younger demographics turning their back on her? Or do they just not like the song. One to keep an eye on in coming weeks.

The summary.... Another week at No.1 as Australia’s best testing song with 10-39yr olds...Adam Lambert with ‘If I Had You’. Doing particularly well with adults....No.1 with both 33-39yr olds and 25-54yr olds.

Hanging in at No.2 this week is Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’.

At No.3 is Enrique Iglesias feat. Pitbull with ‘I Like It’. Mr. Pitbull is very popular this week, making another appearance at No.5 as well.

No.4 goes to the fast climbing Scouting For Girls with ‘This Ain’t A Love Song’....another song that’s doing well with adult demographics.

Latest MusicPulse survey results are now available...and what a difference a week can make. A lot of those ‘Potential Hit’ numbers of the past few weeks have paid off this week.

Here’s the summary:

Vaulting into the No.1 spot as our most popular song is Adam Lambert with ‘If I Had You’, hot with all the main age groupings we track (10-39yrs). Oh...and it’s No.1 with the 25-54yr old crowd too.

Slipping to No.2 with the 10-39yr olds this week is Eminem feat. Rihanna with ‘Love the Way You Lie’. Don’t feel too sorry for Eminem, he still has two songs in the Top 10 with ‘Not Afraid’ holding down the No.6 position as well.

Another big mover this week is Scouting For Girls with ‘This Ain’t A Love Song’ sprinting into the No.3 position overall. And with only 89% ‘Familiarity’ it still has room to grow.

At No.4 is an old favourite....’Airplanes’ by B.o.B feat. Hayley Williams.

And rounding out the top five at No.5 is Enrique Iglesias feat. Pitbull with ‘I Like It’.

Latest Australian MusicPulse survey results are now available. So what's really hot in Australia this week? Well, let's find out.

Not a lot of change in the Top 5 this week, with Enrique Iglesias feat. Pitbull with “I Like It’ hanging onto the No.1 spot for a second week.

Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg slides back up to No.2 with strong figures in all tracked demos. Seems there isn’t anyone disliking those ‘California Gurls’.

At No.3 is the song that was No.2 last week, ‘Love The Way You Lie’ from Eminem feat. Rihanna.

‘Airplanes’ by B.o.B feat. Hayley Williams holds down the No.4 spot (3 last week) and rounding out the Top 5 is Eminem with ‘Not Afraid’, in the same position it was a week ago.

Of note outside the Top 5 is Adam Lambert with his new one ‘If I Had You’ sitting at No.6, up from No.14 last week and demonstrating very strong ‘Potential’ figures (meaning it's not real well known yet, but those that do know it love it....as it gets more familiar, it will 'potentially' get bigger).

Also looking strong are ‘Club Can’t Handle Me’ by Flo Rida feat. David Guetta; All Night Long from Alexandra Burke feat. Pitbull and ‘Billionaire’ by Travie McCoy feat. Bruno Mars. All of them showing very strong ‘Potential’ at the moment.

This weeks’ Australian MusicPulse survey results are available. A couple of stunning debuts this week too with ‘Club Can’t Handle Me’ by Flo Rida feat. David Guetta and ‘All Night Long’ by Alexandra Burke feat. Pitbull, both debuting inside the Top 10.

But here's the summary:

Edging into the No.1 testing spot this week is Enrique Iglesias feat. Pitbull with ‘I Like It’, with good strong numbers across all demographics, including adults.

At No.2, showing he lost nothing with his long absence from the music scene, is Eminem feat. Rihanna with ‘Love The Way You Lie’. As you would expect, primary support is with the 10-32yr olds.

No.3 goes to ‘Airplanes’ with B.oB feat Halley Williams, a song that has threatened No.1 overall for a few weeks but not quite getting there.

At No.4 is Katy Perry’ ‘California Gurls’, slipping from No. 1 where it’s been for the past few weeks, but ‘Burn’ (ie: people are starting to tire of it) is starting to kick in now.

And rounding out the Top 5 at No.5 this week is Eminem making another appearance with ‘Not Afraid’.

It’s interesting to note the story of Justin Bieber being told in this weeks’ figures. His rankings with the age groupings we test goes like this:

10-17yrs – No.1

18-24yrs – No.5

25-32yrs – No.24

33-39yrs – No.30 (with one of the lowest scores we’ve ever seen for any song!)

Australia's MusicPulse Survey Results - w/c July 11th 2010

This weeks’ Australian MusicPulse survey results are now available.

The summary:

Well, the top 5 this week is pretty predictable with little change from a week ago. At No.1 is Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’. I guess in Australia we love to dream of summer.

Adam Lambert rolls back up to No.2 with ‘Whataya Want From Me’, still proving to be an adult smash...No.1 with 33-39yr olds and 25-54yr olds.

Enrique Iglesias feat. Pitbull checks in at No.3 with ‘I Like It’, a big hit with the 18-24yr olds.

Usher feat. Will.i.am stay in the Top 5 this week with ‘OMG’ taking out the No.4 spot.

And at No.5 is Eminem with ‘Not Afraid’. His collaboration with Rihanna, ‘Love The Way You Lie’, sits at No.17 overall but is already No.4 with the 18-24yr old crowd.

A lot of songs outside the top 5 are demonstrating strong ‘Potential’ scores this week so a shake up at the top can’t be far away as the old favourites start to burn out and the new ones gain in 'Familiarity'.
